When Windows can’t find the disk to install Windows or restore a system image, it means that the machine has a storage controller that Windows doesn’t recognize because it doesn’t have the necessary driver for it. To fix the problem, proceed as follows:
Step 1. Download Storage Controller Drivers.
1. From another computer, go to your device manufacturer’s support website and download the necessary drivers for the storage controller.*
* Notes/Help:
1. Usually on laptops/desktops with Intel CPUs and an NVME disk, you need to download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) driver from the manufacturer.
2. If you are experiencing error 0x80042414 when trying to restore a Dell or HP Windows Server from an image, you need to download the RAID controller drivers from your server manufacturer.
2. Extract and copy the downloaded driver to a Windows USB installation drive.
Step 2. Load Storage Controller Driver in System Image Recovery.
1. Boot the affected computer from the Windows installation USB drive you copied the storage drivers.
2. At the first screen choose Next and then select Repair your computer.
3. Click Troubleshoot and then System Image Recovery.
4. On the next screen select the System Image to restore your computer from and click Next.
5. On the next screen, click Install drivers.
6. Click OK on the “Add Drivers” prompt.
7. Now select the Windows USB drive in Explorer and then open the folder where you saved the storage controller drivers.
8. Explore the contents of all folders to locate the INF driver file for the storage controller. Then select it and click Open.
9. Select the storage controller driver and click Add Drivers.
10. Wait for Windows to load the drivers and when done, click Next.
