This guide contains step-by-step instructions to resolve the error “We couldn’t find disks. To get a storage driver, click Load driver” when trying to install Windows 10/11 on a NVME disk on laptops or desktops computers.
When Windows Setup cannot detect the hard disk drive on a computer, it either means that there is no disk drive installed on the computer, or that the computer has a storage controller that Windows cannot recognize because it does not have a driver for it.
The second reason usually applies to laptops or desktops with NVME disk or RAID controller, and the only solution to bypass the mentioned problem is to load the necessary Intel RST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) drivers for the storage controller during Windows installation.
How to FIX: Cannot find drives when installing Windows 11/10 on a laptop or desktop with an NVME disk.
Step 1. Download & Copy Intel RST Drivers to USB.*
* Note: The instructions below are written for an Acer TravelMate laptop (Model: P215-53). However, the instructions are similar and can also be applied to computers from other manufacturers (laptops or desktops) that display the mentioned error in Windows Setup.
1. From another computer, navigate to the Acer TravelMate P215-53 drivers page.*
* Notes:
1. If you own a different Acer model, navigate to Acer Support > Drivers and Manuals page, type your model number to find the drivers for your model.
2. If you have a different computer model, download the necessary Intel RST drivers for your laptop/desktop or motherboard manufacturer’s support site.
2. Download the IRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) Driver.
3. Extract the downloaded ZIP file to a folder, then copy that folder to your Windows installation USB drive.
Step 2. Load the Intel RST drivers at Windows Setup.
1. Boot the affected computer from the Windows installation USB drive you copied the Intel RST drivers and start the installation.
2. When prompted where do you want to install Windows, click Load driver.
3. Then click the Browse button.
4. Explore the contents of the USB drive, open the folder with the Intel RST driver and then navigate and select the folder “f6vmdflpy-x64” at this location:
-
F6VMDf6vmdflpy-x64
5. At the next screen, choose the Intel RST Controller and click Next.
6. Wait for Windows to load the drivers and detect the disk drive. Once this is done, you can continue to install Windows normally.
