If you’re looking to install the Windows 11 version 24H2 on your PC, then this guide is for you.
Windows 11 24H2 was released on October 1, 2024 and will soon be available to install on supported PCs* via Windows Update. However, because some users do not receive the 24H2 update in Windows Update, this guide shows all the available ways to install it.
Windows 11 24H2 Hardware Requirements (Minimum)*.
- CPU: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, with 2 or more cores, on a compatible 64-bit processor with SSE4.2 (Intel) or SSE4A (AMD) support.
- RAM: 8 GB or 16 GB DDR5/LPDDR5 for Copilot+ PCs.
- Storage: At least 64 GB or 256 GB SSD/UFS for Copilot+ PCs.
- System firmware: UEFI, Secure Boot capable.
- TPM: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0
- Graphics card: Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver.
- Display: High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally.
- Internet connection and Microsoft account.
* Notes:
1. Certain features require specific hardware, see detailed Windows 11 system requirements.

* IMPORTANT: Before trying to update your system from Windows 11 23H2 or 22H2 to 24H2, do the following important actions:

First of all download, install and run Microsoft’s PC Health Check utility to verify that your PC, meets the system requirement to run Windows 11 24H2. (After opening the PC Health utility click on the Check Now button and if your computer is able to run Windows 11, you should see the following screen.)
- Back up all your important files to an external USB storage device to ensure you don’t lose any files if something goes wrong.
- If you have BitLocker encryption enabled on your system, go ahead and suspend BitLocker before installing the update (very important) and re-enable BitLocker after the update is successfully installed.
- Make sure you have more than 64 GB of free space on your C: drive before you install the update.
- Delete the useless files with Disk Cleanup. by using the instructions in this tutorial: How to Free Up Disk Space with Disk Cleanup.
- Disconnect all USB devices that are not needed for the update. (e.g. USB Drives, USB Flash Disks, USB Printer etc.)
- Download and install all available Windows updates.
- Disable -or better- temporarily uninstall all non-Microsoft security software (antivirus, antimalware, firewall, etc.), to avoid installation problems during the upgrade.
- Upgrade to Windows 11 v24H2 via Windows Update.
- Update to Windows 11 v24H2 with Installation Assistant.
- In-Place Upgrade to Windows 11 v24H2 using Windows ISO file.
- Clean Install Windows 11 v24H2.
Method 1. Install Windows 11 24H2 update via Windows Update.
1. Navigate to Start -> Settings -> Windows Update.
2. Turn On the option “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” and then click Check for updates.
Method 2. Update Windows 11 to version 24H2 using the Installation Assistant.
Microsoft’s recommended method for upgrading your Windows 11 system to version 24H2 is to use the “Windows 11 Installation Assistant”.
1. Navigate to Windows 11 download site to download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant.
2. Then run the “Windows11InstallationAssistant.exe” and choose YES at the UAC warning.
3. Click Accept and Install on the License Terms and then wait the Installation Assistant to download the required files and install the update.
4. When the process is complete, click Restart Now to complete the installation
5. After restart, the installation will continue and after a few minutes will end.
6. Finally, navigate to Windows Update and check if there are any other updates available to install. If so, let Windows to install them and you’re done!
Method 3. Upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 using Windows ISO file.
The next method to update your system to Windows 11 v24H2, is by using a Windows 11 ISO file.
1. Navigate to Windows 11 download site & download the “Media Creation Tool” (mediacreationtool.exe), by clicking Download Now under “Create Windows 11 Installation Media“.
2. Run the “mediacreationtool.exe“, accept the license terms and click Next at language and edition settings.
3. In “Choose which media to use” options, select ISO file and click Next.
4. Select to save the “Windows.iso” file in “Downloads” folder and click Save.
5. Then wait the media creation tool to download the Windows.iso file and when its done click Close and continue to next step.
6. Right-click on the Windows.iso file and select Mount. (or double-klick on the “Windows.iso” file to directly open it)
7. In the new windows that opens with the contents of the mounted ISO file, double-click on “setup.exe” to start the installation of Windows 11.
8. Click Run and then click Yes at UAC warning.
9. Then click Install to begin the installation of Windows 11.
10. Wait until the installer checks for new updates and when prompted Accept the license terms.
11. Finally, click Install to upgrade your system to Windows 11 version 24H2 without losing your files, apps and settings.
Method 4. Clean Install Windows 11.
The final method to install Windows 11 24H2, is to backup your files and to perform a fresh installation of Windows. To do this:
Step 1. Create a Windows 11 USB Media.
For a clean installation of Windows 11 24H2, you must first create a Windows 11 USB installation media. To do this, you can use either the RUFUS USB creator utility and the “Windows.iso” file downloaded in the method above, or Microsoft’s Media Creation tool (MCT).
To create a Windows 11 USB with MCT:
1. Connect an empty* USB drive on your PC (at least 8GB).
* Attention: The USB drive will be formatted (deleted), during the media creation process. So, make sure there are no files on it you might want.
2. Download and run the Media Creation Tool and at “Choose which media to use” screen, select USB flash drive and then click Next.
3. Let the Media Creation Tool to download the required files to create the Windows 11 USB and when it finishes proceed to next step to clean install Windows 11.
Step 2. Install Windows 11.
1. Restart the computer and boot from the Windows 11 USB drive you created in previous step.
2. On the next screen, select your desired language & time/currency settings and click Next.
3. Then select your Keyboard settings and click Next again.
4. On the next screen, select Install Windows 11, then check the option “I agree everything will be deleted including files, apps, an settings” and click Next.
5. Now -if prompted- enter your purchased/own Windows 11 product key and click Next, or click I don’t have a product key* to enter the key after installing Windows.
* Note: If you haven’t entered a product key and if prompted, select which version of Windows 11 you want to install on the next screen and press Next.
6. Then, accept the license terms, and at the next screen select to install Windows 11 on “Disk 0“. *
* Note: If you have used the disk before and the disk contains partitions, please carefully select and delete all partitions of DISK 0 one by one.**
** Attention:
1. At this point the installer shows all drives as available to install Windows, including the Windows 11 USB drive. So be careful not to delete the partitions of drive 1, which is usually the Windows USB installation Media.
2. If you have more than one disks in your system and to avoid data loss, I suggest you turn off your system at this point, remove the secondary disk and to keep only the disk where you want to install Windows to.
7. At ‘Ready to install’ screen click Install to begin the installation of Windows 11.
8. The Windows 11 24H2 installation will start. Sit back, wait for the installation to complete without interrupting it and you’re done!
