Windows 10 in S Mode (formerly known as Windows 10 S) is a specific edition or configuration of the Windows 10 operating system designed for security and performance.
While Windows 10 in S mode offers improved security and performance, it has limitations, as it does not allow the installation of software outside of the Microsoft Store. However, users have the option to switch from S mode to a regular version of Windows 11 Home or Pro. The switch is free and once done, users can install any third-party software.
This guide contains instructions on how to exit from Windows 11 S Mode.
How to Switch from Windows 11 Home S to Windows 10 Home.
To Switch Out from S Mode in Windows 11, you only need to have a Microsoft Account* and to follow the steps below.
* Note: If you’re looking for a way to exit from S Mode without using a MS account, follow the instructions on this guide: How to Disable Windows 11 S Mode without Microsoft Account.
1. Click the Start menu and go to Settings > System > Activation.
2. Expand S Mode and then click Open Store.
3. Now click the Get button to switch out of S Mode.
4. Type your Microsoft account email address and click Next. Then type your MS account password and click Sign in.
5. In the “Use this account everywhere n your device” screen, read carefully the information and click Next if you agree, or just click Microsoft apps only.
6. Wait a few seconds to exit S mode and when everything is ready, click Close.
7. You’re done! From now on you can install any software or run any application outside of Microsoft Store.*
* Optional step: If you don’t want to use a Microsoft Account on your device, then you can remove the MS account you added before, by going the following:
1. Go to Start menu > Settings > Privacy & security and turn OFF the Device encryption. (if it’s ON). *
* Info: Many new laptops come with the operating system pre-installed by the manufacturer and – by default- with device encryption already enabled. When this happens, the encryption key is stored in your Microsoft account and can cause you problems in the future if you remove your MS account from the Device without first disabling Device Encryption.
2. Then click Accounts > Email & accounts.
3. Click on Microsoft Account and then click the Remove button.
